2010: Andres Henestrosa for Maarten Jansen

On January 16th 2009 Prof. dr. Maarten Jansen is honoured with the Medal of Merit 'Andres Henestrosa' in Oaxaca.

Prof. dr. Maarten Jansen (Department of Archaeology, University of Leiden) is honoured by the House of Representatives and the Government of the Mexican state Oaxaca with the Medal of Merit Andres Henestrosa for his scientific publications on the Mixtec civilization, especially its image decoding manuscripts from the Mixteekse colonial period.

The medal is established to honor the memory of last year deceased famous literary author Andres Henestrosa, who was from Zapotek origin. The medal is the highest award from the Mexican state Oaxaca for individuals who made exceptional scientific research or literary or artistic work, in the relation to the cultural heritage and the indigenous languages of Oaxaca.

Maarten Jansen was previously honoured by the Mexican Government with the commandership in the order of the Aztec Eagle.

The Medal of Merit Andres Henestrosa is issued to Maarten Jansen on January 16, 2009, in Oaxaca City.
