Andrew Gawthorpe on The Conversation: ‘Trump’s second term shocks allies, emboldens adversaries’
University lecturer Andrew Gawthorpe argues on The Conversation that Donald Trump’s approach to international relations is upending traditional alliances.
Rather than reassuring allies and deterring enemies, Trump is pressuring longtime partners, such as NATO members, while making bold territorial claims over Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. ‘The result is a world in which American allies can no longer rely on the US to be a reliable partner. They may increasingly have to fend for themselves against not just their traditional foes, but also a predatory Washington’, Gawthorpe warns.
