At a turbulent time in which world leaders are struggling to take stand against Trumpism, an artist from the small island of Puerto Rico sent a powerful message at none less than the unofficial national day of the United States. With over 128 million views, Bad Bunny’s performance broke NFL social media records. It has been described as a ‘revolutionary Super Bowl show’ (AP News), a ‘history lesson’ (The New York Times) and a ‘political firestorm’ (The Wall Street Journal), all the while joy and celebration dominated the scene. At this presentation, three academics of Latin American Studies will unravel the many layers of the performance – including language, culture and politics - to assess the depth and reach of this buzzing event.
