Extremist and terrorist online communication and content sharing have posed a challenge to counterterrorism, security, and intelligence agencies for decades. The rise of artificial intelligence platforms, algorithms, and chatbots has significantly exacerbated these challenges. Extremists can now generate new text, audio, video, and image content rapidly and with minimal effort, tailoring it to specific audiences, including young people.
The complexity of this threat necessitates a multi-layered approach involving various levels of government, governance, and public-private partnerships. The Governance of Radicalism, Extremism, and Terrorism specialisation (soon to be renamed Terrorism & Political Violence) within the Crisis & Security Management master's programme has assembled a panel of experts—including policymakers, practitioners, and researchers—to discuss the rapidly evolving threat and ongoing efforts to counter terrorists' and extremists' exploitation of artificial intelligence in online communication.
