Bart Schuurman is als Universitair Hoofddocent verbonden aan het Institute of Security and Global Affairs, waar hij hoofd van de onderzoeksgroep ‘Terrorism and Political Violence’ is. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op het begrijpen van eigentijdse vormen van terrorisme, extremisme and radicalisering. Bart Schuurman is als Universitair Hoofddocent verbonden aan het Institute of Security and Global Affairs, waar hij hoofd van de onderzoeksgroep ‘Terrorism and Political Violence’ is. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op het begrijpen van eigentijdse vormen van terrorisme, extremisme and radicalisering. De afgelopen jaren heeft hij zich in het bijzonder beziggehouden met de vraag waarom de meeste geradicaliseerde mensen juist geen terroristische aanslagen plegen. Daarnaast heeft hij onderzocht hoe het onderzoeksveld terrorismestudies zich heeft ontwikkeld, waarom sommige mensen zich bij jihadistische groeperingen aansluiten, in hoeverre re-integratie programma’s voor voormalige extremisten en terroristen zinvol zijn, en waarom machtige staten zo vaak verliezen in asymmetrische of ‘kleine’ oorlogen.
Momenteel werkt hij aan een project over het stelsel Bewaken en Beveiligen. Bart’s werk is mogelijk gemaakt door beurzen van o.a. de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijke Onderzoek (NWO), het Canadese ‘Community Resilience Fund’, het Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid, het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, en de Fulbright Commissie. Hij promoveerde in 2017 aan de Universiteit Leiden met een proefschrift over de Hofstadgroep en behaalde in 2009 de Master ‘Internationale Betrekkingen in Historisch Perspectief’ aan de Universiteit Utrecht.
