Academic supervisor
Vasileios P. Karakasis is currently teaching and coordinating BSc, Pre-Master and MSc courses of Public Policy and International Relations at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University and at LUC at The Hague.
He launched his BA studies in Political Science at the University of Athens (2002-2006) and completed his MA in International Relations (Track: Turkish-Greek Relations) at Bilgi University (2006-2008) and his MSc in Public Administration (Track: Crisis and Security Management) at the University of Leiden.
In the context of his PhD research project, Vasileios is conducting a qualitative analysis to explore the “policy paradigms” that enlighten the opinion leaders of countries in the face of isolated crisis events, especially when these occur in the context of a protracted conflict. The single case study he deals with is related to the recent energy crises around the island of Cyprus (2011 and 2014). He seeks to find out how the opinion leaders of the Republic of Cyprus (governed by the Greek Cypriots in the south) and the northern part (de-facto administered by the Turkish Cypriots) evaluate these events and articulate their security concerns vis-à-vis each other. He wants to throw light to the underlying stakes that the opinion leaders attach to this kind of events and how they assess their impact on the long-lasting peace negotiations in the island.
