Biostatistics
In medical research more and more data are gathered using advanced technologies. For example in genetics the activity of tens of thousands of genes can be measured simultaneously; in brain research the acivity of tens of thousands of brain segments is measured. Finding patterns in such data is like finding a needle in a haystack. To help research in these areas there is a need for new and advanced statistical methods. Jelle Goeman develops such methods. He works on methods for multiple hypothesis testing and on high-dimensional prediction models.
Academic career
Jelle Goeman studied mathematics and history at Leiden University, where he obtained his PhD on March 8, 2006 with his thesis “Statistical methods for microarray data”. He worked as a researcher at Leiden University and at imperial College in London. In 2013 he was appointed professor of biostatistics at Radboud University. He returned to Leiden University in 2016 where he gave an inaugural address on November 17, 2017: Statistical methods for Microarray data: pathway analysis, prediction methods and visualization tools
Prizes and honourable appointments
Jelle Goeman received the C.J. Kok prize in 2011 for extraordinary acievements in mathamatics and/or medicine. In 2012 he was awarded the Biometry Award for his article “Multiple testing for exploratory research”.
