Hisashi Owada (1932) has been a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague since 2003. Before being appointed to this post, he served as Japanese Ambassador to the United Nations (1994-1998), and earlier worked in various capacities for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo and Japan's embassies in Russia and the United States.

Along with his diplomatic career, judge Owada was professor of international law and organization at Waseda University (Japan), and President of the Japan Institute of International Affairs. He has taught at University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School and New York University Law School. Next to being an honorary professor at Leiden University, he is currently also on the faculty of the New York University Global Law School and serves as a member of l’Institut de Droit International. Judge Owada is the author of numerous writings on international legal affairs.
