Dmitri Filippov was born on November 21, 1966 in Moscow and studied chemistry at Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology. After the graduation he learned the ABCs of synthetic bioorganic chemistry under the supervision of Dr. B.I. Mitsner. In 1992 he moved to Leiden and after a short period was appointed as a Ph.D. student in the group of Prof. J.H. van Boom. Upon completion of his Ph.D. thesis ‘Phosphoramidites in synthetic bioorganic chemistry’ he remained in the BIOSYN group working on a wide range of research topics for the most part involving synthesis of modified biopolymers. Over the years of continuous synthetic activities he also managed to contribute to the fields of natural product synthesis, fluorous chemistry and protein synthesis.
