The Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR) in Rabat is looking for a lecturer and coordinator for a Graduate Students Field School (0.6 – 0.8 FTE) as of 1 February 2024.

Description of the project
The Netherlands Institute in Morocco, in collaboration with all institutes from the Faculty of Humanities and the African Studies Centre Leiden, intends to develop a field school aimed at MA and doctoral students in Morocco that will explicitly focus on peer learning of students from various disciplines, such as linguistics, African studies, Middle Eastern studies, history, archaeology, anthropology, museum and heritage studies, biology, etc.
Students from the Netherlands will work together with Moroccan students on a specific site and theme, to which they will bring their various competences, skills, and disciplines. The theme of the field school will be (at least) one of the two following:

  1. port cities on the Moroccan coast;
  2. management of natural resources, new social debates, and sustainable development goals.

Responsibilities
As the field school coordinator, you are responsible for developing the curriculum and organising the Graduate Field School. You follow Leiden’s procedures and ensure that the course programmes meet Leiden’s academic standards. For the contents of the curriculum, you are assisted by the academic director and the lecturers of NIMAR. You also provide lectures in at least one of the disciplines relevant to the field school. You have a broad and interdisciplinary interest and a varied network of academics who can participate in the field school, and the pedagogical skills to encourage peer learning and development of research skills. Furthermore, you serve as first-level support for students before, during and after the field school. You will also participate in other NIMAR activities, such as the regular education programmes, academic and cultural activities and visits of study associations, universities and universities of applied sciences.

Your main duties are:

  • Develop, coordinate and implement the contents of the programme, curriculum and assignments of the field school;
  • Manage the registration of the programme, the quality assurance and the end-of-course evaluations in consultation with the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University, which, among other things, includes contacting examination and programme committees and study coordinators;
  • Provide one or more courses in the social sciences or humanities for the field school and regular education programmes at NIMAR;
  • Correspond and coordinate with other instructors and guest lecturers;
  • Build and maintain a network of relevant researchers, institutions and civil society in Morocco;
  • Serve as first-level support for (potential) students with regard to registration, education, accommodation and general well-being and mentoring students;
  • Receive groups (both students and professionals) at NIMAR: provide information about NIMAR activities and Moroccan culture.


Your profile
You are a professional, pro-active, and flexible team player with a strong sense of initiative and excellent intercultural communication skills. You cooperate easily and effectively with your colleagues in the Netherlands and Morocco and do not mind looking beyond the boundaries of your own discipline. You are aware of the latest developments in your own field and in general, analyse them critically and bring ideas and people together to create a unique learning experience. You are well-organised, precise and have an eye for detail. You follow the appropriate procedures for the registration of NIMAR’s programme courses, as well as the end-of-course evaluations and establish the quality assurance of the programmes. You are empathic and highly value the well-being of the students and, in addition to their academic development, their general experience of their stay abroad.

Qualifications:

  • You hold a PhD (preferably) or a master’s degree with excellent results in the social sciences or a relevant field in the humanities;
  • You preferably have research and teaching experience in an interdisciplinary academic setting and you encourage peer learning;
  • You have a strong understanding of the Anglo-Saxon and Dutch higher education system and the humanities;
  • You have a good knowledge of Morocco, both in the academic and practical sense;
  • You have a strong insight into social developments that are relevant to NIMAR, Morocco and the Netherlands;
  • You have excellent organisational skill and are able to plan and coordinate a big event from A to Z;
  • You are able to empathise and to carefully and clearly communicate with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds;
  • You have a large network of scholars and in civil society that you can easily mobilize;
  • You are fluent in English; knowledge of Dutch , French and/or Moroccan Arabic is an asset.

Description of the organisation
The Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR) is an institute of Leiden University with a national mission. NIMAR offers, under the responsibility of the Leiden University Faculty of Humanities, bachelor’s and master’s programmes on the languages, cultures, religion, and society of Morocco and North Africa. NIMAR facilitates and stimulates scientific research on Morocco and the region and endeavours to make this research accessible to Dutch society. NIMAR also plays a role in building a national library collection on Morocco and the Arab world.

NIMAR's staff consists of approximately ten employees and is led by the Director and Institute Manager of NIMAR.

We offer
A job position for the period of six months. After a positive evaluation of your work and work attitude, a renewal is possible. Depending on your educational background and work experience, the monthly salary amounts to a minimum of 29.952 MAD and a maximum of 44.928 MAD gross, based on a full working week of 37 hours with a full-time position (scale 8 Rrlok).
This job is not an expat function, it is a local position based on the salary and working conditions of the Dutch Embassy in Morocco. Appointment goes through Adecco.
