Post-doctoral Researcher on the Governance of Social Citizenship and Migration (1.0 fte)
Research programme: Social Citizenship and Migration
For the period 2019-2024, Leiden University’s Executive Board (CvB) has invested 2.1 million euros in the interdisciplinary research programme Social Citizenship and Migration. This initiative allows the Institute of Public Administration and Leiden University College to jointly appoint a post-doctoral researcher.
The overall aim of this programme is to analyze how developments in immigration and social citizenship provide and provided challenges and opportunities for the governance of societies and to inform theory and practice. Several societal and governance issues related to citizenship (e.g. housing, social conflict over ideology, moral values, exercising of rights) have become even more complex due to recent developments in immigration, These themas have been studied before, but on sufficiently in conjunction and not from multiple, integrated perspectives.
The Postdoc will work on the analysis of social citizenship and migration from a socialization and a governance perspective. The combination of these perspectives is necessary to understand the interplay between individual beliefs, socialization processes, and the governance of migration-related issues. It will highlight relevant socialization and governance mechanisms across several domains, including the family, education, welfare, media, and commerce at both the local and national level, analyzing how individuals develop their perceptions of social citizenship and their own and others’ roles in society. As social citizenship is becoming an increasingly important domain at the EU level, the sub-project also entails the analysis of EU-level coordination of social policy provision and EU-level policy directives.
Recently, a European consortium coordinated by Leiden University has received funding from Horizon Europe for a large-scale research project on the consequences of digitalization and automation, the internationalisation of the workforce and the transition towards a green economy. The project will analyse labour market effects of these changes, the social policy responses to address these labour market effects and the political dynamics of welfare state reforms. The project examines eight policy areas: unemployment, sickness, old-age insurances, retraining, work-life balance, family and care policies, gender equality, foreign labour recruitment and freedom of movement, combining conventional protection policies with the more contemporary social investment approaches. The new Horizon Europe project will be closely related to the research programme Social Citizenship & Migration and the Postdoc will also be involved in the Horizon Europe project.
The position comprises the following tasks:
• Conducting innovative research within the framework of the programme Social Citizenship and Migration;
• Preparing research grant applications;
• Coordinating and conducting research in a European consortium which has received funding from Horizon Europe;
• Submit research results for publication in academic journals;
• Present papers at international conferences;
• Actively disseminate the research findings and engage stakeholders in research activities;
• Organise and participate in seminars, workshops and conferences of the programme.
• A PhD in political economy, political science, public administration, economics, sociology or another discipline that is relevant for the Institute of Public Administration and Leiden University College;
• Excellent research qualities relevant for the research profile of the Institute of Public Administration and Leiden University College, demonstrated for example by (international) publications. Ideally, the research of the candidate is related to the programme Social Citizenship and Migration.
• Experience with designing public opinion surveys, survey experiments and conducting quantitative data analysis is considered an advantage.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to effectively communicate with external audiences;
• Knowledge of the Dutch language is considered an advantage. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Dutch, he or she will be expected to learn Dutch within a period of approximately two years;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work constructively in a team.
Terms & conditions
• We offer a full-time position for 1.0 fte (38 hours per week). This concerns a position for 2.5 years.
• Salary range from € 3,821 to € 5,230 gross per month for a full-time position (scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Salary scale depends on education and experience.
• Start date: 1 June 2022.

The post-doctoral researcher will be working at both the Institute of Public Administration (50%) and at Leiden University College (50%). The Institute of Public Administration and Leiden University College are both part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs.
