Assistant Professor (UD) in the field of Energy Systems and Global Challenges

Project description
LUC seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor to join the staff for teaching and research in the Earth, Energy, and Sustainability major as well as potentially contribute to other majors within our international Liberal Arts & Sciences honours bachelor of science (BSc) programme centered around ‘Global Challenges’. Starting date: July 2021.

The Assistant Professor should show clear affinity with the ‘Global Challenges’ focus of LUC’s programme. The Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching bachelor (undergraduate) students and conducting research in energy systems that is societally relevant and related to current global challenges. We are especially interested in candidates with a broad foundational background in the energy systems field with core expertise in one or more of the following: energy system analysis, energy economics, energy modelling, and energy & social science. We have a preference for an interdisciplinary scholar with an appreciation for both the technical, policy and social challenges of the energy transition. In addition to teaching and research within your field of expertise, interest in engaging in interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching related to the energy transition is a distinct advantage. In this regard, we are looking for a scholar who can teach in the Earth, Energy, and Sustainability” major, and either the “World Politics” and/or “Governance, Economics, and Development” majors. The appointment also involves instruction in LUC's first-year program, including ‘Global Challenge: Sustainability’, ‘Academic Writing’, and/or quantitative methodology courses. Contribution to the Global Citizenship programme is also an option.

Teaching experience is essential. Further, the ideal candidate will have an active research agenda that illustrates independent scholarship demonstrated in peer review publications. The ideal candidate will actively contribute to a dynamic college culture of bachelor student research. Concretely this includes integrating students in active research projects, integrating research into all levels of the curriculum, and advising students on Capstone research projects (senior honors theses).

LUC is fully part of Leiden University and LUC staff is able to take full advantage of being part of this while also contributing actively to the energetic and stimulating atmosphere of our college community in The Hague. The location of Leiden University within the dynamic Randstad knowledge corridor provides opportunities for collaboration with expertise at several leading European universities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. LUC also values close connections with societal and governance partners and stakeholders, in particular in the city of The Hague, but also outside of the city.
