The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society (VVI) seeks applicants for the position of
Socio-Legal Postdoctoral Researcher
The research is part of a project on Access to Justice in Libya (A2JiL) executed by the VVI in cooperation with the Centre for Law and Society Studies (CLSS) at Benghazi University. This 48-month project will ascertain whether, to which extent, and how, in a country plagued by political and institutional divide, armed conflict and lack of security, people have access to justice, and how to improve such access by identifying and reducing barriers. It will employ a socio-legal approach combining a legal analysis, consultations with stakeholders and interviews, and surveys. It will entail conferences, workshops and meetings in Libya (or Tunisia) and the Netherlands to discuss, develop and disseminate its findings and recommendations.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed the intention to fund this project. The possibility to fulfill this vacancy depends on the final approval of the project proposal by the funder, which we expect to receive soon.
Under the supervision of the project leader, and closely together with him and other research team members in the Netherlands and Libya, the researcher should perform the following tasks:
- Conducting independent socio-legal research on, and preferably in, Libya;
- (Co-)writing project’s reports and academic publications;
- Conducting international literature research aimed at contextualizing research findings, and supporting Libyan researchers;
- Contributing to the development of guidance notes, tools, and resources for Libyan researchers;
- Participating in project planning, organisation and reporting;
- Giving qualitative research training;
- Giving quantitative research training;
- Co-coordinating the survey.
- Experienced researcher in socio-legal studies with relevant PhD degree;
- In-depth understanding of protracted conflict in the global South and its interaction with law, governance, and society, evidenced by relevant academic publications;
- Experience in a conflict-ridden, and therefore sometimes inaccessible field is an advantage;
- Good knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative social science research methods;
- Excellent writing skills in English; knowledge of Dutch will be considered an advantage;
- Knowledge of Arabic, or, if otherwise, readiness to invest seriously in learning it;
- Excellent organization and communication skills;
- Availability for traveling to and in Libya, and nearby Tunisia or Egypt, security permitting;
- Available to start in March 2021 or soon thereafter.

The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society (VVI) is part of the Leiden Law School. The VVI seeks to advance knowledge of the formation and functioning of legal systems in their social contexts, the impact of these systems on society and vice versa, their effectiveness in governance, and their contribution to development. The Institute adopts a socio-legal and global approach, doing research on law in the books and law in action in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. VVI staff teaches several socio-legal thematic and regional courses for both Dutch and foreign exchange students. In addition, VVI provides PhD supervision, advisory services and training courses to policy makers and practitioners.
Terms and conditions
We offer a one year term position, with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from € 2,790.- to € 4,402.- gross per month on a full-time basis (pay scale 10, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
