Senior Project manager
The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) studies scientific research and its connections to technology, innovation, and society. Our research, bibliometric and scientometric tools, and evaluation expertise provide a solid basis for supporting research assessment and strategic decision making and for developing science policy. The institute had a long tradition in quantitative approaches and has been building up its capacity and expertise in multidisciplinary approaches and methods in the last decade.
In its contract research and consultancy work, CWTS BV supports a broad range of clients, ranging from universities, academic hospitals, research institutes, funding bodies, governments and private companies across the world. To further expand these services, we are searching for a pragmatic project manager and services developer who can combine an academic mindset with a can-do mentality.
You are an entrepreneur. You will play a strong role in driving the new value proposition for our contract research and consultancy in tailor-made, mixed-methods approaches that meet the newest views on research evaluation and strategic decision-making. Such approaches are capable of incorporating state-of-the-art scientometric analyses and qualitative insights, in order to link the strategy of a research organisation to its process and outcomes. This is what we call an evaluative inquiry approach.
Having a strong understanding of research evaluation and its protocols (e.g. SEP VSNU/KNAW/NWO), and strategic decision making in research management, you are a key contact and sparring partner for our clients during project acquisition and execution. Preferably, you have a network and position in the (inter)national arena of research management and research evaluation. You will acquire new projects from your network and link our latest scientific developments in mixed method approaches to the needs of our clients.
You will be reporting to the sales director and director operations of CWTS BV. An important part of your work will be to help with project staffing, while developing the new proposition. This involves matching abilities and affinities of CWTS staff with the needs of a project. For this, you will need a good feeling for CWTS’s human capital, and an understanding of how to bring colleagues on board in new projects and make sure they have the type of projects and roles they can excel in, or develop in.
You have an academic background and your current work environment requires an academic level of thinking and working. You speak the language of research management and research evaluation in academia, and understand the landscape of science policy at an (inter)national level. You are a creative, curious and innovative research advisor who likes to work in research projects. You are a product developer, who can streamline and operationalize services based on our fundamental research. You are able to translate scientific insights into tailor-made and pragmatic projects that support our clients in research evaluation and management. You are communicative and engaging, being able to explain complicated things in a clear and convincing way, know-how to make the essence clear. You foster and encourage cooperation, both with your colleagues and with our clients. You are responsible for several projects in parallel. You carry the load in larger projects naturally, coach less experienced colleagues and initiates improvements in our services. You are a result-oriented, enthusiastic person, that feels responsible to deliver. What else can you offer?
- An entrepreneurial project leader and product developer who collaborates with our sales director to further translate our research to a value proposition and tailor-made (and standardized where feasible) service to our clients;
- At least a university master's degree in a relevant field, and preferably a doctorate in your field;
- At least five/eight years work experience;
- Experience in qualitative methods in evaluation practices;
- Preferably, this is supplemented with some basic skills in SPSS (SQL and/or Python is a plus);
- Communicative skills: You have expertise in working with commercial clients, finding common grounds and understanding based on content knowledge: client empathy;
- You have affinity and experience with publishing reports;
- Experienced working in a project driven environment;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Dutch and English.
The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences comprises four institutes: Education and Child Studies, Political Science, Psychology and Cultural Anthropology & Development Sociology. The Faculty also includes the Centre for Science and Technology Studies. The Faculty is home to 5,000 students and 600 members of staff. Terms and conditions
We offer a one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal for another two years based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from € 4.538,- to € 5.826,- gross per month based on a full-time position 12, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities)
