Senior Project Manager EU funded projects
Leiden University is a member of the EUniWell alliance that unites 7 universities and 102 associate partners drawn from 7 distinct regions of Europe. It presents an action-oriented response to well-being, grounded in research expertise, educational leadership and civic engagement to meet the challenge set out by the Council of the European Union and the OECD. The European Commission supports the further development of the EUniWell initiative as part of its European Universities pilot.
This role presents an exciting opportunity for an experienced project manager to lead on the implementation of this complex EU project in close cooperation with the project managers at the six other institutions, internal stakeholders and the project management team at Leiden University.
As a Project Manager you will be responsible for the daily management and implementation of the EUniWell activities at Leiden University under the direct supervision of the coordinator of the International Affairs unit within the department for Strategy and Academic Affairs. You will play a pivotal liaison role with all internal and external stakeholders within this initiative, spanning all Work Packages (WPs) and tasks related to the EUniWell initiative implementation, including:
- Monitoring the overall progress regarding milestones and deliverables;
- Operationalisation and timing of all activities in the project;
- Identification of any unanticipated risks;
- Acting as the centre of communication between all internal and external stakeholders, including: Prompt liaison with the Head of Unit and the international team of project managers, various committee chairs and task forces;
- Assisting all WP and Task Leaders in their timely delivery of project outcomes and reporting requirements and manage associated budgets;
- Champion the preparation of deliverables, including policy statement and annual reports as well as preparation of the technical interim and final reports;
- Responsible for the overall management and development of the EUniWell database at Leiden University;
- Identifying additional funding opportunities for further development of this initiative beyond the project timeline, co-drafting and supporting proposal preparation and tender submissions for project development related opportunities in Europe.
- A University degree;
- Minimum 5 years work experience in project management in the higher education sector and/or as a consultant in a related capacity;
- Extensive experience with the management and implementation of EU contracts and grants in complex organisations, including proposal submissions and reporting;
- Exceptional organisational and planning skills with the ability to coordinate information and processes involving multiple people/teams;
- Ability to manage a complex and, at times, heavy workload, to multi-task and take initiative;
- Good interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels within the organisation, listen to and influence others;
- Common sense approach, with a positive attitude and the ability to adapt to an evolving working environment;
- Office administration experience, including a proven track record of successfully maintaining databases and office records;
- Excellent English skills, both written and verbal proficiency at a native level, a good knowledge of Dutch is considered an advantage;
- Experience of writing for different audiences and purposes, including funding proposals, and presenting information clearly;
- Cross-cultural sensitivity and appreciation;
- Familiarity with EU policy development in the area of higher education, research and innovation;
- Pro-active, self-motivated and result oriented, takes initiative and has the ability to solve problems independently;
- European national or holder of a valid work permit.
The Administration and Central Services department supports the Executive Board (CvB) in managing Leiden University. The department is also responsible for the policy and decision-making of the CvB. The Administration and Central Services department works closely with the faculties and the expertise centres. The department carries out tasks and provides services relating to finances, staff, legal affairs and strategic communication in the areas of university administration, career advice, appeals and objections procedures and press information and science communication.
Strategy and Academic Affairs is responsible for strategy development and policy advice relating to teaching and research. It is the duty of SAZ to inform and advise the faculties. SAZ prepares for decision-making and applications for new degree programmes, translates legislation into educational practice, develops policy to promote and support student success, promotes the internationalization of the teaching, advises on developments in the research profiles, supports accreditation processes, develops PhD policy, drafts the strategic plan, develops policy on professors and is responsible for the academic integrity policy.
Terms and conditions
We offer a three year position, starting from October 2020. It’s a challenging and inspiring international work environment with ample opportunities for personal and professional development. We offer acompetitive salary in the range of € 3.746,- to € 5.826,- gross per month, depending on experience (pay scale 11-12, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities), based on a full time position.
