Colloidal particles are a powerful model system to investigate fundamental physics questions but also the basic building blocks to create designer materials with novel properties. Most structures built from colloidal particles are rigid and their material properties are therefore static. The aim of this PhD project is to use a new type of flexible bond to assembly materials that can change their shape and hence functionality, and control this shape-change by integrating active elements. Image analysis will be used to quantify the conformational changes and reveal exciting new physical phenomena of these active colloidal materials.
- MSc degree in Physics, Physical chemistry, or Material Science with an emphasis on physics;
- Affinity for quantitative experimental work in soft matter;
- Excellent grades and reference letters;
- Team-work attitude.
The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.
The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organized in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programs. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 1,300 staff and almost 4,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together.
Working at the Faculty of Science means being part of an exciting, dynamic scientific environment which sets high standards for its students, staff and support staff alike. The Faculty is known for its friendly and team-spirited atmosphere, which promotes mutual exchange of knowledge. For more information, see the website.
