The Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS), is looking for a

University Lecturer (UD) in Film and Literary Studies

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching at undergraduate levels, in lecture and seminar formats, in the Bachelor Film- en literatuurwetenschappen and in other programs and courses as required;
  • Supervising BA theses;
  • Participating in the development and implementation of education innovations – also in digital form;
  • Playing an active role in recruiting Dutch and international students by contributing to open days, orientation and information sessions;
  • Contributing to administrative and management duties within the program and LUCAS;
  • Doing research in the field of film or literature within one of the research programs of LUCAS;
  • Acquisition of project funding at the national, European and international level.

Selection criteria

  • A PhD-degree in the field of film- or literary studies and an awareness of current viewpoints as well as innovative methods within the field;
  • A publication record that is commensurate with career stage;
  • Demonstrable and outstanding teaching skills (demonstrated by teaching evaluations, BKO-registration, etc.) and experience with educational innovations;
  • Demonstrable expertise in the field of film. Expertise in the field of literature is preferred as well;
  • Demonstrable experience with gender studies;
  • Preferably familiar with transmedia storytelling;
  • Experience in creating inclusive and welcoming classroom environments;

  • Internationally oriented;
  • Excellent command of the English and Dutch language;
  • Flexible, excellent communication skills, team worker.

Our organisation
The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. With its staff of 995, the faculty provides 27 master’s and 25 bachelor’s programmes for over 7,000 students based at locations in Leiden’s historic city centre and in modern buildings in The Hague. The Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS; https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/humanities/centre-for-the-arts-in-society) is one of the  seven Research Institutes of the Faculty of Humanities. It aims to be a prominent player in the research field of the arts (literature, art, architecture, media and design).

Terms and conditions

We offer a 0,45 FTE position for a year, with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.

Salary range from € 3.637 to € 4.978 gross per month for a fulltime appointment depending on prior education and working experience (pay scale 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities)
