The Faculty of Science and Institute of Biology are looking for a Communication Adviser (0.6 FTE).

Key responsibilities

The Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) is an internationally oriented institute for research and education in biology. We are part of the Faculty of Science at Leiden University. Our aim is to perform top quality innovative fundamental and strategic research that will lead to scientific progress, contribute to solutions for societal challenges, and generate industrial opportunities. The IBL is currently undergoing a transformation that requires more focus on exposure of the institute in the outside world. Therefore, the new function of communication advisor has been created.
As communication adviser you will be responsible for the outreach of the Institute of Biology. Your key tasks include:

  • Shape and implement the communication policy of the institution;
  • Write news items regarding doctoral graduations, awards, research news, etc.;
  • Manage the social media platforms of the Institute of Biology, including reactions to outside news and Leiden University press releases;
  • Manage the Institute of Biology agenda;
  • Maintain and extend the communication network both inside and outside the university;
  • (Further) develop the role of the Institute of Biology within society (e.g. events and festivals);
  • Actively take part in partnerships of both Leiden University and the Institute of Biology.

Selection criteria

  • You have a strong interest in academic research;
  • You have a background in life sciences and experience in science communication;
  • You have a proactive attitude in talking to researchers and you like taking initiative;
  • You must be proficient in spoken and written English and Dutch and have good communication skills;
  • You should be able to build a network with journalists and communication advisers in both the faculty and the university;
  • You are a team player, but are also able to work independently.

The research carried out at the Faculty is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 1,300 staff and almost 4,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together.

The Institute of Biology (IBL) is positioned in the Faculty of Sciences. The core business of IBL is to perform top quality innovative fundamental and strategic research that will lead to scientific progress, contribute to solutions for societal challenges, and generate industrial opportunities. The Institute is organised in three multidisciplinary clusters: Animal Sciences & Health, Plant Sciences & Natural Products and Microbial Biotechnology & Health. Presently, over 120 fte (including postdocs and PhDs) are employed at IBL.

Terms and conditions

We offer a one year term position with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding, and performance. The salary range is from €2,709 to €4,274 gross per month (pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
