‘Being a teacher in the biological and the environmental sciences comes with its privileges. I can integrate some of the most interesting current scientific advances into our education programs.'
Combining research and education
'The best way to go about this is by combining field-based research and education. This is for examples showed in the recently established Polderlab. I see this as my mission in Leiden, and I try and implement that in each of the courses that I teach.
I’m heavily involved in the field research during the minor Biodiversity, the 3rd year course ‘Environmental Processes’, the MSc course ‘Human Impacts on the Environment’ and 2nd year course ‘Environmental Science Research’. Nothing is more rewarding to me as the sheer enthusiasm that I see during these courses. This is a perfect illustration that good science can be great fun.’
