Mark de Rooij appointed SAILS Professor at the Institute of Psychology

As of April 2022, Mark de Rooij has been appointed SAILS Professor AI and Data Theory at the Institute of Psychology. This position will enable him to contribute to the goal of the interdisciplinary programme: to build on and expand the current expertise on AI within Leiden University, working from within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

Mark de Rooij has been a full Professor of Methodology and Statistics in Psychological Research at the Institute of Psychology since 2014. His research interest lies in Predictive Modelling, Computational Statistics, and Data Visualization through Logistic Multidimensional Data Analyses. Mark has been involved in studies on mental disorders and early dementia detection, amongst others.  

In the upcoming ten years, he will contribute to the scientific consortium Growing Up Together in Society (GUTS), a large national partnership of psychologists, sociologists, child psychiatrists and neuroscientists. GUTS is sponsored by the Dutch governmental Gravitation programme. Within this project, Mark will lead the AI work package that will assemble data on neurobiological development, social networks, delinquency, and education with the aim to formulate a new interdisciplinary theory on child development. The main challenge is to develop a new trustworthy algorithm that combines data from diverse domains with diverse properties without neglecting the theoretical insights from the different disciplines.
