Tijmen Baarda heeft theologie gestudeerd in Leiden en rondt op dit moment een proefschrift af met de naam Arabic and Aramaic in Iraq: Syriac Christian Commitment to the Arab National Project (1920–1950). Hij is lid van het door NWO gefinancierde project Arabic and its Alternatives onder leiding van prof.dr. Heleen Murre-van den Berg (Instituut voor oosters christendom, Nijmegen).
