This class will deal with the earliest stage of the English language: Old English, spoken between ca. 450-1100 AD. By means of some short assignments, students will be introduced to the characteristics of Old English and its differences with Present-day English. They will find out why Old English sounded so much like present-day Frisian and explore the reasons why English has changed since. In addition, they will be introduced to a number of texts in Old English that reveal a lot about the Anglo-Saxon, early medieval culture.
