The Faculty of Humanities/ Leiden University Centre for Digital Humanities (LUCDH) invites applications for a PhD candidate in Digital Humanities
PhD candidate, Leiden University Center for Digital Humanities (1,00 FTE)
Candidates should have a relevant MA, combining expertise in one or more fields of the Humanities with demonstrable expertise and skills in AI methods, such as machine learning. Additionally, good programming skills in Python are required. The fields of the Humanities include history, art history, linguistics, philosophy, media studies, area studies, cultural studies, literary studies, religion studies, philology and related fields.
The successful candidate, together with prospective supervisors, will develop her/his own research project dealing with Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities.
The PhD project will be carried out at the Leiden University Center of Digital Humanities at the Faculty of Humanities. The PhD candidate will be supervised by a domain expert from the Faculty and one of the assistant professors in Digital Humanities.
The candidate is expected to:
• develop and carry out a PhD project at the intersection of AI and the Humanities
• present research results at conferences and workshops
• publish research results and write a PhD thesis
• participate in the activities of the Digital Lab, share digital humanities knowledge with and give support and advice to researchers and advanced BA and MA students
• assist in teaching digital humanities courses provided by LUCDH
• develop and maintain an active graduate community of DH scholars
Research in Digital Humanities
The PhD candidate will be formally employed at the Faculty of Humanities and appointed at one of the faculty’s institutes. The faculty’s institutes are rich in expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, media, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. The candidate will be housed at the Leiden University Centre for Digital Humanities (LUCDH). LUCDH spearheads innovative research in Digital Humanities and offers advice and support to researchers in the Faculty of Humanities working on digital data and computational methods (see https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/humanities/centre-for-digital-humanities/ )
Terms and conditions
The appointment is available from September 1, 2022 and will initially be temporary for a period of one year. Upon a satisfactory performance outcome, the appointment will be extended for a period of three years. The appointment is in line with the collective employment agreement of Dutch universities. Salary range from €2443.- to €3122.- gross per month (pay scale P) based on fulltime employment.
