Student and Educational Affairs (SEA), department Centre for Innovation, is looking for a:

Data and Intelligence Teamlead (0,8 – 1,0 FTE)

At the Centre for Innovation (CFI) we work together as a multidisciplinary team to create innovative solutions to enhance education, research, and society in general. As the teamlead of the data intelligence team, you will manage a small team with various technical backgrounds (data analysts, UX/backend/frontend, XR developers), play a role in strategy development within the Centre for Innovation, and structure workflows within the Guild (team.

The team plays a major role in developing, deploying, and supporting data driven applications.

Key responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Lead a team of self-managing professionals with different technical backgrounds and support them in their professional development;
  • Coach, mentor, and develop your team;
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and provide regular feedback;
  • Improve and manage the software development workflow within the team;
  • Strategy development around data and AI;
  • Represent the Centre for Innovation in working groups within Leiden University and its partners;
  • Collaborate in interdisciplinary team with technical, didactical, media and project management experts on projects that enhances the learning experience for students, supports teachers and have a social impact;
  • Carrying out and attaining the mission of the Centre for Innovation and Leiden University.

Selection criteria

You have working experience in software development or data science which makes you understand the opportunities and challenges that come with working in these fields and deliver successful projects. You have developed and maintained relationships with third parties and was involved in project acquisitions. The past years, you moved to a supervision or management type of role, but you still enjoy getting your hands dirty from time to time and staying up to date with the latest technologies.

You will report to the Director of the Centre for Innovation and have regular meetings with the managers of the other teams within the Centre for Innovation (Operations, Learning, Media, and Project Management teams).

  • BSc/MSc in AI or Data Science, Computer Science, or related discipline/equivalent experience;
  • 7+ years of working experience of which at least 3+ years of management or supervision of a technical team;
  • Excellent team building skills, with flexible and multidisciplinary team;
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching;
  • Excellent communication skills, Ability to work independently, and the ability to translate needs to solutions;
  • Experience with some languages, for example JavaScript, Python, R, Java, and C#;
  • Good command of English in both writing and speaking. Good command of Dutch in both writing and speaking is a plus;
  • Experience with Learning Analytics, with the open source community and with setting up architectural solutions for projects are a plus.

Terms and conditions

We offer this position initially for a period of one year. Salary range from € 4.629, - to €5.943, - gross per month (pay scale 12) based on full-time employment, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%), training and career development and sabbatical leave.
