PhD candidate/graduate student in algebraic geometry.

Job description

The Mathematical Institute of Leiden University invites applicants for a PhD position with David Holmes in algebraic geometry. You are likely to end up working on a problem somewhere around enumerative and/or logarithmic geometry. You will be joining an active and growing group around enumerative and log geometry, with 3 other PhD candidates and 1-2 postdocs working on closely related topics, within a larger group in Leiden specialising in algebra, geometry and number theory. We run a lot of local reading groups, as well as taking part in national algebraic geometry seminars. The position comes with some light teaching duties. 

Qualifications

  • An MSc in Mathematics;
  • A strong background in algebraic geometry;
  • Highly motivated, enthusiastic and creative researcher;
  • English communication and writing skills.

Mathematical Institute

The Mathematical Institute is one of the eight institutes within the Faculty of Science. It is responsible for the research and education in mathematics and statistics at Leiden University. The institute has a strong international orientation. Its mission is to perform high quality research at the frontiers of mathematical knowledge, and to educate future generations of mathematicians and statisticians in a friendly but challenging environment.

Conditions of employment

We offer a full-time appointment of initially one year, with an extension after a positive evaluation of the progress of the research, personal capabilities and compatibility. The appointment will be extended for another three years for PhD candidates (salary range from 2.443,-  to € 3.122,-  gross per month; pay scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

Starting date

From 1 September 2022, flexible.

Teaching
Maximum 10% teaching; this usually means assisting 1-2 courses per year.

Language
It is not expected that you speak any Dutch when you arrive, and it is not necessary for life at work or outside of it. Dutch courses are offered by the MI, and can be a nice way to feel more at home.
