Assistant professor in experimental physics at the interface of soft matter and biological physics, tenure track (1.0 FTE)
The Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) is searching two new faculty members in the area of experimental soft matter and biological physics. For this position, we are particularly interested in candidates with a focus on synthetic (non-living) active matter (e.g. synthetic active fluids, self-propelled particles, etc.) and/or with a unique approach that connects with our existing research lines in self-organization, mechanics and geometry. Besides an assistant professor in experimental soft matter, the institute is also looking for an: Assistant professor in experimental soft matter. In exceptional cases, appointments at associate or full professor level may be considered.
- Establishing an independent, internationally recognized research line at the interface of soft matter and biological physics and publications in leading scientific journals;
- Acquisition of external funds through research grants;
- Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level in physics;
- Supervision of BSc and MSc students in their thesis work;
- Contribution to the inclusive atmosphere, management and organization of the institute.
- Ph.D. degree in physics and research experience at the postdoctoral level;
- Demonstrated strong interest in an academic career through activities and publication record;
- Excellent communications skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Strong commitment to teaching and willingness to further develop teaching skills.
Information tenure track
We offer a tenure track that upon successful performance will lead to promotion to a tenured position as associate professor and upon continued growth in that performance to promotion to a full professor position. A special mentoring program is offered with fellow Tenure Trackers in a peer group as well as with senior staff members in the department. We actively support learning of Dutch through departmentally funded courses.
Soft Matter at the Leiden Institute of Physics
The soft matter community at the Leiden Institute of Physics consists of the groups of Luca Giomi (theoretical soft- and biomechanics), Daniela Kraft (experimental self-assembly of colloidal matter), and Martin van Hecke (experimental/theoretical mechanical metamaterials). The groups are embedded in the Leiden Institute of Physics, which features a broad research spectrum ranging from biological and soft matter to quantum matter and cosmology, as well as a long-standing tradition of excellence in physics research. The institute offers access to state-of-the art research facilities and fosters an international atmosphere with strong interactions among the various groups. Within the Leiden Faculty of Science, the biological and soft matter groups also collaborate on various projects with the Institutes for Chemistry, Biology, and Drug Research.

Terms and conditions
We offer a full-time, 6 year term position, with the possibility of a tenure position based on performance. Salary range from € 3.637,- to € 4.660,- gross per month (pay scale 11 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
