The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society of Leiden Law School is looking for a Socio-Legal Researcher (0.8 FTE).
 

Project description

The research is part of a project entitled ‘The Role of Law in Libya’s National Reconciliation’, executed by the VVI in cooperation with the Centre for Law and Society Studies (CLSS) at Benghazi University. The project aims to address major challenges to national reconciliation in Libya, i.e. key issues regarding national governance, decentralization, national identity, security forces and transitional justice. It will identify and assess the role of law – both actual and potential, enabling and constraining - with regard to those issues. It will employ a socio-legal approach combining a legal analysis, consultations with stakeholders and interviews. It will entail conferences and workshops in Libya (or Tunisia) and the Netherlands to discuss, develop and disseminate its findings and recommendations. The project duration is 36 months divided into two phases: one year and two years. The first phase has been funded by the Netherlands Embassy in Tripoli; funding of the second phase is in preparation.

Your work will consist of:

  • Conducting independent literature research on issues covered by the project;
  • Assisting the project leader (PL) in overseeing the work of field researchers;
  • Organizing the project events in the Netherlands and Tunisia under the supervision of the PL;
  • Providing research and editorial assistance in writing the project’s reports.

Selection criteria

  • Relevant master degree, e.g., Law, Social Sciences, with demonstrated interest in law, governance and society;
  • Demonstrated research experience, and keen interest in interdisciplinary socio-legal research methods and approaches;
  • Knowledge of state, law, and society of at least one country in the MENA region preferably Libya;
  • Excellent writing skills in English; knowledge of Dutch and Arabic will be considered an advantage;
  • Excellent organization and communication skills;
  • Available to start as soon as possible.

The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society (VVI) is part of the Leiden Law School. The VVI seeks to advance knowledge of the formation and functioning of legal systems in their social contexts, the impact of these systems on society and vice versa, their effectiveness in governance, and their contribution to development. The Institute adopts a socio-legal and global approach, doing research on law in the books and law in action in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. VVI staff teaches several socio-legal thematic and regional courses for both Dutch and foreign exchange students. In addition, VVI provides PhD supervision, advisory services and training courses to policy makers and practitioners.

Terms and conditions

Initial period of employment in this position is one year, with the intention of renewal for the total project period, conditional on funding and performance.
Salary range from €2,588 to €4,084 gross per month on a full-time basis (pay scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
