Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University Centre for Linguistics has a vacancy for a PhD candidate in Linguistics (specialisation African languages) (1.0 FTE).

 

Project Description

The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) is hosting a research project entitled ‘Bantu Syntax and Information Structure’ (BaSIS).
The project will investigate the morphosyntactic expression of information structure in nine Bantu languages to establish which aspects of information structure play a role in nominal licensing, with the aim to contribute to both the systematic description of these languages and a more encompassing model of syntax.

Key responsibilities

The candidate is supposed to carry out the following tasks:

  • Conducting original research (including fieldwork) on the Cameroonian language Tunen;
  • Writing a PhD thesis;
  • Submitting research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals;
  • Presenting papers at (international) conferences;
  • Some teaching;
  • Organizing and participating in discussion groups, seminars, workshops within LUCL.

Selection criteria

  • A completed Master or equivalent degree in linguistics by the start of the position (1 September 2018); 

  • Fieldwork experience or demonstrable affinity with it;
  • Demonstrable affinity with syntax, theoretical and descriptive linguistics; 

  • Proficiency in English and French (or the intention and ability to reach this within a short period);
  • A pro-active and creative attitude and excellent analytical skills;
  • Ability to work with databases is a pre;
  • Ability to work independently; 

  • Social and organizational competencies.

Research at our faculty/ institute

Terms and conditions

Appointment will be according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten). The employment will be for a period of four years (first a contract of 18 months with an extension of 30 months after positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility), starting 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment must lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. The gross monthly salary is set on €2,222 in the first year, increasing to €2,840 gross per month in the final year.
