Research

My research is concerned with China’s regional and global interactions in the modern and contemporary era, especially during times of international conflict and power shifts. I am particularly interested in the associated contestations over and shifts in narratives and norms, including those concerning war and imperialism, global order, and international law.

Teaching

I teach various courses in our BA Chinese Studies, BA Japanese Studies, MA Asian Studies and BA/MA International Relations programmes including:

  • Modern Chinese History
  • China in the International Order
  • Sino-Japanese Relations
  • International Politics and Economy of East Asia
  • The Past in the Present: Nation-building in Modern China
  • Thesis & Research Methods seminars

Supervision

I supervise research on questions related to the modern history and international relations of China, East Asian regionalism, and China–Europe (Netherlands) relations. I particularly welcome projects on the history and memory of imperialism in East Asia, the politics of history, and questions of Chinese statecraft, diplomacy, and law.
