More information about Victor Roggeveen

Victor Roggeveen does research into the influence of leaders in organizations on the probability of safety crises. Within organizations the primary process regulates the flow of energy in order to create added value. Uncontrolled escape of this energy, resulting in serious damage or injury is considered a safety crisis. The probability of a safety crisis is reduced if the risks on uncontrolled escape of energy are known and reduced to a minimum; this is called the risk reduction process. In a model of this risk reduction process the following five process phases are distinguished: Knowing (situational awareness), Being able (competence), Willing (motivation), Daring (courage) and Doing (implementation of change). In this risk reduction process leadership plays an important role. Leadership behaviours can be distinguished in task oriented, relation oriented and self oriented behaviours. Based on retrospective as well as prospective investigation Victor wants to identify which specific leadership behaviours are positively or negatively related to the level of control of each individual phase of the risk reduction process. It is his objective to develop a valid and prospective method to assess the influence of leaders in organizations on the probability of the development of a safety crisis. Note: The scope of this study is limited to the prevention of safety crises and does not include emergency response.

Victor Roggeveen is a safety practitioner with a marine engineering background. After a 10 years career as safety manager of the North Sea operations of a US oil company he founded the safety consultancy firm AdviSafe Risk Management in 1984. He states to be an 'independent safety consultant'. Victor is a member of an international operating incident investigation group, a so-called 'Flying Squad'. On request this group investigates safety incidents on a global scale. Apart from the above he conducts training courses in safety management and incident investigation.
