Thea Coventry has been a staff member of the Grotius Centre since 2016, as a PhD candidate and lecturer.

Thea Coventry studied law (honours) and philosophy at the Australian National University and was admitted as a lawyer in 2013. In 2013 she worked as a legal associate at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Sydney. She completed the Globalisation and Laws master (cum laude) at Maastricht University in 2015, focusing on human rights, international law and European criminal law. During her masters she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for the International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict in Bochum, Germany.

Research - The Mediterranean Sea and International Regulatory Models for Transnational Organized Crime

Thea’s research uses the migration/refugee crisis in the Mediterranean Sea as a case study to examine whether the harmonized offence model in the Suppression Conventions, particularly the Migrant Smuggling Protocol, is an effective and appropriate method to combat transnational crime, and promote cooperation between states.
