Professional experience

Suzanne Roelen received her BSc degree in Animal Sciences in 2015 and her MSc degree in Animal Sciences in 2018 at Wageningen University. During her bachelor she majored in terrestrial animals, mainly focused on ruminants. During her masters she specialized in the field of Sustainable Animal Production Systems. As such she found out to be mainly interested in cows, and (tropical) dairy systems in particular. Over the years she discovered to be passionate about how to create truly sustainable livestock systems in harmony with nature and with respect for both farmer and animal.

For her MSc thesis she spent three months in northern Ghana with the aim to explore the current state of ruminants value chains and potential of grain legume residues as a livestock feed resource as part of the larger N2Africa project. During her fieldwork she conducted interviews with multiple actors of the ruminant value chains across three different regions in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Ministry of food and agriculture (MOFA).

Shortly afterwards Suzanne started her internship at the Louis Bolk Institute (LBI) during which she performed an explorative study focused on the potential benefits of integrating fodder trees on Dutch dairy farms for animal health and welfare. This study was part of the AGFORWARD project focused on agroforestry systems in Europe. In May 2018 she was invited to present her results at the 4th European Agroforestry Congress (EURAF) in Nijmegen.

In the last phase of her master studies Suzanne worked on the design of a permaculture system for a crop farmer in the peat colonies (Veenkoloniën)  in the Netherlands as part of an academic interdisciplinary consultancy project.

In January 2019 Suzanne started her new job as a junior researcher at the Environmental Biology department of CML.

Research topic

Suzanne’s currently doing research with the Dutch ACCEZ program which has an overall aim to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy within the area of Het Groene Hart. Within the this program her project aims to identify (a combination of) suitable measures by proposing a redesign and/or reconsideration of the current agricultural landscape that will allow for the restoration and support of natural capital, provision of ecosystem services and maintenance of natural values making use of a social-ecological approach. To do so she will conduct a case study with dairy farmers in the Alblasserwaard.
