Curriculum Vitae

Stéphanie Noach is Assistant Professor Art History at Leiden University.

Noach specializes in contemporary art history and theory, with a focus on the Caribbean and Latin America. Her research examines the vitality of matter and questions how from the interactions between artworks, theory and poetry, mainly from the Caribbean, other ways of doing and thinking art history sprout. Noach’s teaching addresses subjects in anthropology, global art history, as well as contemporary art history and theory. She is currently working on her first monograph about the vitality of darkness in contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Art.

Her PhD thesis, Dark Matters. Recasting Darkness with Contemporary Latin American Art, was granted the Cum Laude distinction. Noach holds a BA and MA Cum Laude degree in Art History (University of Amsterdam) and an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Studies with a concentration in Museum Studies (New York University). She has been a research fellow at the Afro-Latin American Research Institute at Harvard University (2021)­ as well as the Jan van Eyck Academie (2020), and a visiting scholar at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellín (2018) and the University of Arts of Cuba, Havana (2014-2017).

Her work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Fulbright, Route Kunst, NWA/NWO, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, New York University, University of Amsterdm, Mondriaan Fund, Pro Helvetia, and Fundación Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros.

Also active as a curator, Noach has curated exhibitions, discursive events, and performance series at Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Museo de Bellas Artes de La Habana, University Museum of MUAC (Mexico City), Lugar a dudas (Cali), Flora. Ars+Natura (Bogotá), Traspatio (Mérida), Fábrica de Arte Cubano (Havana), Havana Biennial, Museo de Antioquia (Medellín) and Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam.

She is a member of the board of the art space Manifold Books, of the editorial board of the book series Thamyris/Intersecting by Brill, and has been an advisor to the Mondriaan Fund (2019-2021).
