Stefan Penders is a PhD candidate at the Institute for History.
Stefan is currently working on his PhD thesis on the relationship between personifications and imperial ideology within the Roman Empire. In his research, he focusses on the changing use of personifications in different media and the way in which this use might reflect changing attitudes towards both emperor and empire.
Stefan studied History at Leiden University between 2006 and 2012. He finished his Mphil Ancient History with his thesis 'Imperial Waters. Roman river god art in context', for which he was awarded the Fruin Prijs 2012, as well as the Volkskrant-IISG Scriptieprijs 2013.
