Sergey Vasiliev is an Assistant Professor in Public International Law. Before joining the Grotius Centre in January 2016, he was a (postdoctoral) researcher and lecturer in international criminal law and procedure at the Faculty of Law of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2012-15) and the Amsterdam Law School (2006-2012). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam, an LL.M. from Maastricht University, and a law degree from Bashkir State University (Russia).

In 2009-13, Vasiliev was a (coordinating) member of the International Expert Framework on International Criminal Procedure and co-edited its final publication,  International Criminal Procedure: Principles and Rules (Oxford University Press, 2013). He also advised organs and parties in international and hybrid criminal tribunals as well as provided research support to think-tanks and NGOs active in the fields of international law and global justice.

Vasiliev has published extensively on international and comparative criminal law and procedure. He is on the editorial board of the Leiden Journal of International Law, where he coordinates the section on international criminal tribunals. His areas of expertise and research interests cover international legal theory, international procedural law, international and comparative criminal law, and international adjudication.

Career

Before joining the Grotius Centre, Sergey Vasiliev was a (postdoctoral) researcher and lecturer in international criminal law and procedure at the Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2012-15) and the Amsterdam Law School (2006-2012). In 2009-13, he was a (coordinating) member of the International Expert Framework on International Criminal Procedure and co-edited its final publication,  International Criminal Procedure: Principles and Rules (Oxford University Press, 2013). In the past, he also advised organs and participants in international and hybrid criminal tribunals, as well as provided research support to think-tanks and NGOs active in the fields of international law and global justice. Vasiliev has published extensively on international and comparative criminal law and procedure.

Research areas and interests

Sergey Vasiliev’s areas of expertise and research interests cover international legal theory, international procedural law, international and comparative criminal law, and international judicial function. His past research has addressed, among others, the methodological issues of international criminal law and procedure, legitimacy and effectiveness of international adjudication, and international legal pluralism.
