More information about Sebastiaan Knippenberg

Sebastiaan Knippenberg holds a PhD in Caribbean Archaeology (2006, Leiden University). His main research interests relate to stone material sourcing, raw material procurement, lithic tool production and distribution among the islands of the Caribbean. These aspects provide a firm basis for reconstructing exchange patterns and social networks within this dynamic archipelago. His work related to this subject started during his MA-thesis research on St. Martin (1995, Leiden University), where he conducted fieldwork at two Amerindian sites. His MA-research results formed the impetus for a four-year PhD research at Leiden University, which he started in 1998 partaking in the NWO-funded project “ Pre-Columbian inter-insular relationships and social organization on the Lesser Antilles. A multi-dimensional approach”.

Currently he is a post-doc researcher within the NWO-funded VICI-programme headed by prof. Dr. Corinne L. Hofman. In this project he further elaborates on the themes of his PhD research and turns his attention more to the southern Lesser Antilles and the eastern Greater Antilles, as well as the Preceramic Age.

His additional research interests lie within Dutch Prehistory. Since 2003 he has worked as a field archaeologist and lithic specialist for Archol BV, the contract archaeology firm associated with Leiden University. He has supervised numerous excavation projects in the field and has written reports and articles on prehistoric and Medieval house plans and stone tool manufacture at different sites.
