Rick Tazelaar studied History, Philosophy, German Studies, and History and Politics of the 20th Century at Utrecht University, the University of Amsterdam, and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. He obtained his PhD at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich on a dissertation on the personnel and administrative continuities of the Bavarian State Chancellery between the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, and the post-war period: Hüter des Freistaats. Das Führungspersonal der Bayerischen Staatskanzlei zwischen Nationalsozialismus und Nachkriegsdemokratie (2020). He worked as a researcher in the project ‘Demokratische Kultur und NS-Vergangenheit: Politik, Personal, Prägungen in Bayern 1945–1975’ at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin and as a freelance lecturer at the at the Institute for Political Science at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. He held scholarships of the Germany Institute in Amsterdam and the Jena Center 20th Century History. Since 2021 he works at Leiden University.
