Notarieel recht (notarial law) is – by law – a compulsory Dutch-language academic study. Therefore, you will only find English curriculum vitae on our website and no other items in English.

Professor Huijgen (1956) studied law at Leiden University and is specialised in notarial law. In 1979, he obtained his master's degree in law,  followed by his master's degree in notarial law a year later. He gained extensive experience in several notarial practices as a junior civil law notary and started working as a lecturer in private law at Leiden University in 1987. Professor Huijgen obtained his doctorate at Leiden University with his thesis on Liability of the State (1991).

In 1996, he was appointed Professor of Notarial Law at Leiden University and from then until April 2013, he combined this with his work as a civil law notary in The Hague.

Professor Huijgen works as a consultant in fields related to his academic work. He is active in various fields of notarial law (real estate, matrimonial property, inheritance law, estate planning and company law).
