Niels Demper studied law (LLB) and Civil law (LLM, cum laude) at Leiden University (2013 – 2018). From September 2018 to December 2019 he was a lecturer in civil law at Leiden Law School.

Since January 2020 he is connected to the Institute for Private Law, department of Civil Law, as Meijers PhD fellow.

Research

Working title research: Judicial review of discretionary administrative decisions: theory and practice

Niels’ research deals with the judicial assessment of discretionary administrative conduct. He focusses on how civil courts review the acts and omissions of the government and has a strong interest in the phenomenon of judicial deference and the way the principle of proportionality operates within private law.

Promotors: Alex Geert Castermans and Tom Barkhuysen.

Teaching

Niels teaches both Bachelor’s and Master’s courses, such as the Introductory course to Private Law, the Law of Obligations, Property Law and Practicum in Civil Law, and supervises bachelor’s and master’s theses.
