Research Interests

My research within the Vici project focuses on identifying patients at risk of developing unidentified somatic symptoms, such as pain, itch or fatigue. I am interested in unravelling the risk factors associated with early stage symptoms, and I try to understand how and why certain patient groups acquire chronic somatic symptoms over time. These symptoms can have lifelong debilitating effects for the patients, thereby highly impacting their daily functioning and quality of life. Having more scientific insight on the underlying mechanisms has direct societal implications such as early detection of somatic symptoms in primary care as well as reduced costs of healthcare utilization, not to mention a better quality of life of patients receiving early interventions. My research aims to address this problem by making use of psychological, neurobiological and genetic methods.
