I am interested in language in the broadest sense. My project is part of the Language in Interaction NWO-Gravity (Zwaartekracht) program and therefore I have the opportunity to investigate language in an interdisciplinary way. My field of interest is speech perception. How are we able to recognize voices, even when someone only said hello? How can we distinguish only small units in speech sounds, like consonants and vowels? And to what extent is this so special for humans or do we share cognitive mechanisms with non-human animals as well? To investigate this, a comparative approach on different species is crucial. In my PhD project, I investigate cognitive mechanisms underlying speech perception in humans (Tilburg University) and songbirds, namely zebra finches (in Leiden). Furthermore, I will investigate the underlying neural mechanisms of speech perception and in particular categorization in humans with fMRI (Maastricht University).

Biography

I am fascinated in a broad range of topics including neurobiology, animal behavior, (neuro)pathology and science communication. I obtained my Master degree in Neurobiology from the UvA (Amsterdam) and my Bachelor degree in Psychobiology from the UvA. During my Bachelor and Master internships, I gained more experience with neuro-imaging projects, including fMRI and MRS techniques. In these projects, I worked on depression and HIV research. I also worked as a research assistant for this HIV study. After my Bachelor and before the start of my Master, I did internships and freelance work for science desks of Dutch newspapers Het Parool and De Volkskrant.
