My research is focused on the clinical aspects of venous and arterial thromboembolic disorders, with special interest on the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism and deep-vein thrombosis. Pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) are prevalent diseases, occurring in around 1-2/1000 inhabitants per year. Although the two diseases have distinct clinical presentations, they are often coined together as venous thromboembolism (VTE). A better diagnosis of both first and recurrent episodes as well as a more patient tailored treatment will lead a better outcome and will benefit patients with these disorders.

The research aims to optimalize diagnosis of first and recurrent episodes of acute and chronic pulmonary embolism and deep-vein thrombosis and to define optimal treatment, tailored to patient’s risks. To accomplish this, a clinical thrombosis research consortium has been formed with 15 hospitals in the Netherlands and abroad. The clinical research is investigated in large cohorts of consecutive patients presenting to the Emergency department and clinical ward of the cooperating hospitals, using predefined databases, accessible by internet applications, as well as dedicated biobanking for answering translational research questions.
