Maryla Klajn begun her post as a PhD candidate and at the Leiden University Law School Van Vollenhoven Institute in May 2017. Maryla’s PhD fits into the larger project led by Professor M.A.H. van der Woude: 'Getting to the Core of Crimmigration', a NWO funded research aimed at unraveling the legal and social changes and interactions within criminalization of migration in the European context. Within that project Maryla is researching the importance and impact of discretion in the process of merger between criminal and immigration law (‘crimmigration’), focusing on the discretion available to and used by the border police in securing the internal EU borders. The title of the project is: Agents of Change? (Hi)stories, perspectives and everyday practices of intra-Schengen border officials. 

Maryla received her BA degree in Sociocultural Anthropology from University of Washington in 2011, and MSc in Cultural & Social Anthropology from University of Amsterdam in 2017. For her Master’s thesis she researched the implementation of Polish deportation policy, with special attention paid to human agency.

Before commencing her PhD, Maryla has also worked as a research assistant at the University of Washington for Behavioral Psychology, Sociology, and History departments.
