Marlies Reinders has a major track in education. She is involved in the organization of the new curriculum of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Leiden and in the integration of novel forms of education in medicine for (under)graduate students and professionals. Important within the integration of novel forms of education is active learning, whereby students actively participate instead of passively listen. By offering technology based innovative education, such as the MOOC active learning is stimulated. Her research focuses on technological innovations as a driver to improve education. In addition, the integration of education and (transplant) research is of great importance. This is also the subject of her chair, with a primary focus on kidney transplantation.

She published extensively in the field of transplantation and is principal investigator on 2 clinical trials of mesenchymal stromal cell therapy in kidney disease. In addition she is the founder and projectleader of the MOOC Clinical Kidney Transplantation (see the trailer and the Leiden Teacher's Academy) which started January 2016 and the Leiden Oxford Transplantation Summer School (LOTS) (see the trailer) which is held yearly.
