Marijke van Putten graduated in psychology at Leiden University. She received her PhD in Tilburg with her research on the effect of missed opportunities on turning down attractive offers. After this, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Marketing department of the K.U. Leuven. Since September 2009 she works at Leiden University as assistant professor for social and organizational psychology as an expert on Economic and Consumer Psychology.

Marijke van Putten specializes in consumer inertia - when people do not act without consciously deciding not to act. She studies inertia in controlled experimental settings and in the field. She received Netspar grants to conduct large field studies on communicating pension reforms and pension information and worked with the Behavioral Insights Team of Economic Affairs to study consumer inertia in the choice for health insurance and other services. Additionally, with Wijzer in Geldzaken she studied financial planning behaviors of the self-employed. This knowledge was used to build an online tool to help self-employed plan their finances.
Next to inertia, she has studied individual differences in experiencing positive and negative affect and found there are differences in personality and age differences in the intensity of positive affect after experiencing a good outcome.
