Marije Brouwer-Borghuis is an external PhD candidate in the unit Developmental and Educational Psychology of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University. In her research she focuses on identifying working elements of interventions for school refusal. As a practitioner she focuses on promoting school attendance for all youths and addressing school attendance problems.
Research on school refusal interventions
Marije is involved in research to school refusal interventions in the Netherlands (the Knowing What Works research). In her work as a practitioner she supports professionals in the region Twente to make the paradigm shift from a narrow focus on school absenteeism of individual students to a focus on school attendance for all students. She is also co chairing the Expertise Network for School Attendance (KNSA)
Short CV
Marije completed her BsC and MsC at the Radboud University Nijmegen in 2005 and 2006.Thereafter she worked for more than10 years as an educational psychologist for the Link in Almelo, which is an alternative educational program for school refusing adolescents. During this time she started an external PhD to interventions for school refusal. Since 2019 her focus broadened to all types of school attendance problems and to prevention of school attendance problems by becoming involved in the regional approach of school attendance in Twente. Marije is co-chair of the Expertise Network for School Attendance (KNSA), which started in 2015, as a small club of professionals who exchanged experience and knowledge about dealing with youths displaying school refusal, and has grown into a large network focused on school attendance.
Awards
We received an NRO grant for the Knowing What Works project, which explores stakeholder views (i.e. youths, parents and professionals) on interventions for school refusal (Heyne, Brouwer-Borghuis, et al., 2021).
