More information about Marieke Kluin

Marieke Kluin is an Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology. She studied Criminology at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam with a specialization in Youth Criminology. During her studies she worked as a clerk of criminal law at the District Court of Rotterdam and as a probation officer in The Hague. She also conducted research at the National Crime Squad of the Dutch National Police. After that she worked as a researcher at the Safety Science Section of the Delft University of Technology for a year, where she developed several courses and studied various accidents to implement these in faculty education.

From 2009 she started her PhD research at the TU Delft Safety Science Section into the possible relationships between rule violation, compliance, organization criminology and safety in the chemical industry. The focus of the PhD research was on the enforcement of regulations by Seveso inspectors. The study included a multi-case study in which 15 Seveso corporations have been analyzed for a period of 10 years. In addition, the data originated from various sources: document analysis, interviews, a questionnaire and attendance at least one joint Seveso inspection at each corporation. In November 2014 she successfully defended her thesis entitled "Optic Compliance - Enforcement and Compliance in the Dutch Chemical Industry". Her PhD dissertation received media attention and she appeared on television, on the radio, in a TV documentary and in several newspapers which demonstrated her ability to communicate her findings with the general public. During her doctoral research she has written several publications and organized an international congress in 2012 in the field of environmental crime, environmental pollution and victimization.

She obtained the Basic Teaching Qualification in 2012 and Dr. Kluin is currently involved in teaching and coordination of various courses (Leiden Law School) at the undergraduate and the graduate level. She also supervises students in writing Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. She has been a (guest) lecturer in other courses at TU Delft University, Erasmus Rotterdam University and VU University Amsterdam.
Her interdisciplinary research focuses on white-collar crime, environmental crime, compliance and regulatory enforcement. At present, she is involved in a project which focuses on corporate crime by using a life-course criminology perspective.
