Short CV

In 2015, Leon Hilbert obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Business Psychology at Leuphana University Lüneburg, Germany. He continued his studies doing the Research Master in Psychology at Leiden University, where he followed the track of Social and Organizational Psychology. Leon obtained his Master’s degree (cum laude) in 2017. In January 2018, he started his PhD at the Social and Organizational Psychology department at Leiden University, supervised by Prof. Wilco W. van Dijk and Dr. Marret K. Noordewier. Since 2022, Leon works as a PostDoc and Lecturer at the department and at the Knowledge Centre Psychology and Economic Behaviour.

Research

Leon Hilbert’s research investigates psychological effects of having too little money. Low income, debts, or other forms of economic uncertainty often result in financial scarcity, which is the experience of lacking needed (financial) resources. Financial scarcity has been shown to affect people's cognition, emotions, and decision-making, with often detrimental effects for those in financial trouble.

In his research, Leon uses a broad range of empirical methods to study how financial scarcity affects individual and social decisions. For example, he researches how scarcity affects financial avoidance, temporal discounting, and cooperation.
