My research concentrated on the Meso- and Neolithic of the Netherlands in its European context and especially on the process of neolithisation.
Born in 1940, I studied physical geography at Utrecht University and prehistory in Leiden. Was appointed as curator prehistory at the National Museum of Antiquities (1966), wrote a PhD thesis on the prehistoric occupation of the Rhine/Meuse delta and had the honour to be the successor of my teacher and supervisor prof. P.J.R. Modderman in 1982. I played an important role in the foundation in 1979 of the present Faculty of Archaeology, which I served as Dean till my retirement in 2003. I supervised 30 PhD studies, wrote over hundred scientific and popularising papers, and was author or (co)editor of eight major books.
