Formal empires and informal networks - chartered trading companies, especially the VOC and WIC - seventeenth and eighteenth century legal history and litigation.
Research Question: How did free agents oppose the monopolies held by the VOC and WIC when suing the Companies? My PhD research is part of Dr. Catia Antunes' VIDI-project

Kate graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa with a BA in Economic History and English Literature before completing an Honours degree in History at the same university. In 2010 she was awarded an Encompass scholarship and moved to the Netherlands to begin a Research Masters degree at Leiden University in the specialisation European Expansion and Globalisation. She graduated in August 2012.
